Costa Brava Day Trip from Barcelona: Girona, Cadaqués & More
The Costa Brava — "rugged coast" — stretches 200km north of Barcelona to the French border, offering some of the Mediterranean's most dramatic coastal scenery: jagged limestone cliffs, hidden coves of crystal-clear water, and whitewashed fishing villages that look unchanged since Salvador Dalí called this region home. Girona, 38 minutes by high-speed AVE train, is the day trip of choice — a medieval walled city with a Jewish quarter, cathedral steps made famous by Game of Thrones, and a restaurant scene anchored by El Celler de Can Roca (three Michelin stars). Cadaqués, Dalí's beloved village, requires a car but rewards with surreal beauty — whitewashed houses tumbling toward a turquoise bay, and the Casa-Museu Salvador Dalí at Portlligat. Tossa de Mar, accessible by bus from Barcelona, has a perfectly preserved medieval castle rising above a sandy beach. The GR-92 coastal path connects many coves for serious hikers. Visit May–June or September for warm water and manageable crowds.
