Barceloneta: Barcelona's Mediterranean Beach Neighbourhood

Barceloneta is Barcelona's quintessential beach neighbourhood, a triangular promontory of narrow 18th-century streets wedged between the sea and the old harbour that functions simultaneously as a working fishing village, a playground for the city's residents on summer weekends and one of the most visited coastal districts in Europe. The neighbourhood was built in the 1750s to rehouse fishermen displaced by the construction of the Ciutadella fortress, and its grid of identical narrow streets with uniform building heights retains a remarkable coherence — a neighbourhood designed as a unit, lived in continuously ever since.

The neighbourhood's signature dish is the esqueixada, a refreshing salad of salted cod, tomatoes and olives that predates the city's beach culture by centuries. The Barceloneta Market, a beautiful iron-structure pavilion, supplies the neighbourhood with fresh produce and fish daily, while the Maritime Museum in the nearby Drassanes medieval shipyards recalls the era when Barcelona's fleet commanded the western Mediterranean.
