Barcelona Chefs Share 5 Summer Recipes Using Peak-Season Local Produce
From Boqueria tomatoes to Garraf courgettes, July's market haul is peak Mediterranean eating, here's how to cook it.
How we reported this

July is the best month to eat in Barcelona. The stalls at the Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria on La Rambla are stacked with produce that costs a fraction of what supermarkets charge for last week's imports: piles of tomàquet de penjar (hanging tomatoes) for as little as €1.20 a kilo, fat purple aubergines from the Maresme coast, and the first flat green beans of the summer. Knowing what to do with all of it is the point.
The timing matters. July through September marks the height of outdoor life in the city, early-morning runs along the Barceloneta promenade, weekend cycling up to Montjuïc, evenings in Parc de la Ciutadella. Fuelling that kind of movement with ultra-processed food is a waste of what's on offer five minutes from most neighbourhoods. The Mediterranean diet, the framework that underpins eating culture here, is not a set of rules so much as a seasonal habit, and right now the season is doing most of the work for you.
What the markets have right now
Beyond La Boqueria, the Mercat de l'Abaceria in Gràcia and the Mercat de Santa Caterina in El Born are both running full summer stock. Vendors at Santa Caterina, on Avinguda de Francesc Cambó, are selling courgettes from the Garraf region for under €1 a kilo and local peaches for around €2. These are not premium prices, this is simply what July looks like when you skip the supermarket.
Here are five recipes built around what's available right now, each designed to be made in under 30 minutes.
1. Pa amb tomàquet amb anxoves. Halve a day-old pa de pagès loaf, rub the cut side with a clove of garlic, then drag a ripe hanging tomato across it until the flesh dissolves into the bread. A drizzle of Arbequina olive oil from Les Garrigues, a few salt-packed anchovies from the tinned-fish counter at La Boqueria, done. This is breakfast, a snack, or a starter, it adapts.
2. Escalivada. Char two red peppers and one large aubergine directly over a gas flame or under a grill until the skins blacken. Seal in a paper bag for ten minutes, then peel, tear into strips, and dress with olive oil, salt, and a little sherry vinegar. Serve at room temperature on grilled bread or alongside grilled fish. The smokiness is the recipe.
3. Sopa freda de meló i pernil. Blend half a Piel de Sapo melon, widely available at Gràcia markets from late June, with a pinch of salt, a splash of cold water, and a squeeze of lime. Serve chilled in glasses with two thin slices of jamón ibérico draped over the rim. It sounds fussy; it takes four minutes.
4. Albergínies a la parmesana amb herbes locals. Slice aubergines into 1cm rounds, salt them for 20 minutes, pat dry, then fry in olive oil until golden. Layer in a baking dish with crushed tomato, torn basil, and a hard local cheese, Garrotxa from the Pyrenean foothills works perfectly here. Bake at 190°C for 25 minutes. This is a full meal.
5. Síndria amb feta i menta. Cut a quarter of a watermelon into rough cubes. Crumble over 80g of feta, scatter with fresh mint, and finish with a thread of honey and black pepper. A 2023 study published in the journal Nutrients found that watermelon's lycopene content increases significantly as the fruit fully ripens, July melons from the Llevant region are as ripe as they get.
Eating this way costs less than you think
A full shop at Santa Caterina or the Abaceria covering all five recipes, enough for two people, should come to between €18 and €24, depending on fish choices. That's cheaper than most lunch menus on Carrer del Parlament in Sant Antoni. The argument for seasonal eating here has never been purely philosophical; it has always been economic.
