Starting this July, Barcelona's municipal government is running free group exercise sessions for residents aged 65 and over at more than 40 locations across the city, the largest rollout of its Programa Esport i Salut since the scheme launched in 2019. Sessions cover everything from low-impact aqua gym at the municipal pool in Piscines Bernat Picornell on Avinguda de l'Estadi, Montjuïc, to guided Nordic walking circuits through Parc de la Ciutadella in Sant Martí. No registration fee, no equipment cost, no means test.

The timing matters. Europe's population of adults over 65 is growing faster than any other age group, and Spain sits near the top of those projections — the country's National Statistics Institute puts the over-65 share of the Spanish population at roughly 20.4 percent as of 2025, a figure expected to climb past 25 percent by 2040. Barcelona's own demographic data show the Eixample and Gràcia districts are already well above the city average for older residents. Sedentary behaviour among seniors is directly linked to higher rates of cardiovascular disease, falls, and cognitive decline, and public health economists at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra have long argued that community-level exercise intervention costs a fraction of downstream hospital care.

The Ajuntament is working through the Institut Barcelona Esports, the city's sports agency, which coordinates programming with district-level Casals de Gent Gran — the neighbourhood social centres for older adults that already serve as informal hubs across the city. The Casal de Gent Gran de l'Esquerra de l'Eixample on Carrer del Consell de Cent, for instance, is one of the pick-up points where participants can collect the free programme calendar and sign up for preferred session times. Outdoor tai chi runs at Parc de la Ciutadella every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 9:00, while the Barceloneta seafront promenade hosts a guided group walk at 8:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays — deliberately scheduled before the summer heat peaks.

What the Program Actually Offers

Sessions are led by qualified monitors contracted through the Institut Barcelona Esports, not volunteers. Each lasts between 45 and 60 minutes and is capped at 25 participants to allow instructors to monitor form and adapt exercises for different mobility levels. The summer calendar runs through 29 August 2026, after which autumn programming — moving some outdoor sessions indoors to the network of Centres Esportius Municipals — is scheduled to begin in mid-September. The Centre Esportiu Municipal Marítim, just back from Barceloneta beach on Carrer del Litoral, will host indoor balance and strength classes three mornings a week from September onward.

Nationally, Spain's Ministry of Health reported in its 2024 Encuesta Nacional de Salud that only 38 percent of adults over 65 meet the World Health Organisation's recommended 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week. Barcelona's own district health surveys suggest the figure is marginally better in neighbourhoods with dense green infrastructure — like those adjacent to Parc de Collserola or the Passeig de Sant Joan boulevard — but still well short of targets. Free, structured programming is one evidence-backed lever for shifting those numbers.

How to Join Before the Summer Rush

Demand is already outpacing some session slots. Residents can check availability and register through the Ajuntament's online portal at ajuntament.barcelona.cat, via their local Casal de Gent Gran, or by calling the city's general information line, 010, where operators can direct callers to the nearest available session. Some districts — Nou Barris and Sant Andreu in particular — have added extra morning slots this month after early sign-up lists filled within days. Physical leaflets with the full summer schedule are available at all Centre d'Atenció Primària health centres, so anyone without internet access can pick one up at their next GP visit. As always, those with existing health conditions should run any new exercise regime past their family doctor or specialist before starting.
