Barcelona Invests €10M Upgrading Sports Facilities Across All Districts

The Barcelona Institute of Sports will spend 10 million euros on a package of upgrades to municipal sports sites in every district. The centrepiece is the conversion of Hall 2 at Fira de Barcelona into a new multi-purpose hall serving Poble-sec, complete with courts, changing rooms and spectator stands.

City residents have long pressed for more nearby places to train and compete. The timing of the work reflects steady pressure on existing venues as people look for convenient options close to home rather than travelling across the city.

Projects spread through every neighbourhood

Work will start at the CEM Guinardó football ground, where changing rooms will be enlarged and new training spaces added at a cost of 1.8 million euros. Separate contracts worth 1.7 million euros will lay fresh artificial turf on the full-size pitches at La Texionera and the La Foixarda rugby ground, along with updated scoreboards. At the CEM Mar Bella, changing rooms receive a 1.1 million euro overhaul, while the outdoor pool at CEM Can Toda gains a new cover for the same amount.

LED lighting upgrades are planned for the IET Escola Industrial, CEM Pau Negre-Parc del Migdia, Velòdrom d’Horta, CEM Mar Bella, Estadi Joan Serrahima and the La Foixarda ground. Draft plans are also under way for new turf at the municipal grounds in Canyelles, Nou Barris and Menorca, plus fresh paving inside the pavilion at CEM Mar Bella.

Supporting everyday fitness habits

These scattered improvements give residents more reliable places to maintain regular activity without long journeys. The new Poble-sec hall directly answers repeated calls from that neighbourhood for a local indoor option, while the turf and lighting work elsewhere will keep pitches and tracks usable through more of the year.
