Barcelona University Expands Sports Infrastructure for College Teams
Local facilities and programs at the University of Barcelona continue to back domestic and visiting college athletes following recent disruptions.
How we reported this

Two U.S. college basketball teams, Clemson and Oregon State, were unharmed after a van attack in Barcelona's Las Ramblas area but canceled exhibition games due to the incident. Arizona, Tulane and Grand Canyon also reported their groups safe while at least five U.S. college teams had been scheduled in Spain this week for exhibition tours.
University of Barcelona Programs Back Local Athletes
The University of Barcelona leads Catalan university sports with 19 awarded athletes in the 2025 Catalan University Sport awards, the highest number among institutions. UB swimmer Mireia Pradell Carrasco was named the best overall university sportswoman of 2025. UB basketball player Adrià Codinachs received the award for best Catalan university sportsman in the 2024 CCU awards. These results reflect the university's established programs that prepare and recognize student-athletes across disciplines.
Medal Performance and International Hosting
UB is the leading public university in Catalonia for medals won at Spanish University Championships and ranks second in Spain overall. As of the 2024 Spanish University Championships, UB won 62 medals, representing 44 percent of its competitors, with swimming as its top medal-winning discipline. The city infrastructure also supports upcoming events such as the 10th World Inter Universities Championships scheduled for November 2025, when the American College of Greece will send 78 student-athletes to Barcelona to compete in basketball, volleyball, soccer and cheerleading.
The combination of university programs and city venues allows both local competition and international visits to proceed. Teams affected by the Las Ramblas incident are evaluating travel plans elsewhere in Spain while the University of Barcelona continues its annual cycle of awards and championships preparation. Organizers of the November 2025 event can draw on the same facilities and support structures already used for Catalan and Spanish university events.
