Barcelona Opens Five New Schools, Creates 11,720 Third-Grade Seats

Barcelona will launch the 2024-2025 school year on 9 September with five new all-through schools added to the public network.
The expansions address rising demand for integrated infant through secondary education in specific districts. Four of the new schools result from enlargements in the Zona Nord area of Nou Barris, while one stems from a merger in Sant Andreu. These changes coincide with the start of the pre-enrolment window managed by the Barcelona Education Consortium.
Place availability figures
Initial availability stands at 11,720 places for I3 infant education, split between 5,698 in publicly operated schools and 6,022 in state-subsidised private schools. Officials project 10,805 infants will enrol this year, an increase from 10,561 the prior year. Secondary education offers 14,445 total places, including 5,715 in public schools and 8,730 in subsidised private options. Two state-subsidised schools, Escola Sant Francesc Xavier and Escola Sagrado Corazón on C/ Ribes, have closed, with affected pupils reassigned through a special process.
Pre-enrolment runs from 6 to 20 March for infant and primary levels, and from 8 to 20 March for compulsory secondary. Successful applicants complete enrolment between 18 and 26 June in both cases. Districts such as Gràcia and Sant Andreu will not add new groups for I3 this year, while Sants will open one additional group at Escola Pràctiques.

Eight schooling offices operated by the Barcelona Education Consortium provide in-person help with applications for upper infant, primary or secondary schooling. Locations include Ciutat Vella at Placeta del Pi 2, L’Eixample at Carrer de Roger de Llúria 1-3, Gràcia-Horta at Carrer de la Mare de Déu de la Salut 87, Nou Barris at Carrer del Nil 27 and Carrer de Vallcivera 14, Sant Andreu at Carrer del Montsec 20-22, Sant Martí at Carrer de Cristóbal de Moura 223, and Sants-Montjuïc at Plaça d’Espanya 5 on the ground floor.
