Barcelona Locals Flock to Gràcia Terraces as Vermouth Hour Surges This July
Residents have turned back to the pre-lunch aperitivo ritual this summer, filling neighborhood bars with orders for vermouth and conserva plates.
How we reported this

Bookings at vermouth-focused spots across Gràcia jumped 35 percent in the first week of July compared with the same period last year, according to figures from the city tourism board. The increase coincides with daily highs above 32 degrees and the start of the annual neighborhood festival circuit.
The trend matters now because many households are cutting restaurant meals to manage grocery costs that rose 12 percent year on year. Vermouth hour, priced between 4 and 7 euros a serving, offers a fixed ritual that still fits tighter budgets while preserving a Catalan custom that dates to the early 1900s.
Two venues have become focal points for the renewed interest. At Bar Calders on Carrer de Enric Granados, staff added extra tables on the sidewalk after lines formed before noon on weekdays. Across the district on Carrer de Verdi, the family-run Can Vermut extended its terrace hours until 4 p.m. to accommodate office workers who now skip the full lunch break.
Ingredient costs and festival timing
Local suppliers report that demand for anchovy conserva and arbequina olives has climbed since late June. A Mercat de la Concepció vendor said daily sales of these items reached 180 kilos last week, up from 120 kilos in June 2025. The same market recorded a 9 percent rise in foot traffic during the first ten days of July, according to its management cooperative.
Festival organizers in Gràcia have added vermouth stands to this year’s program, which opens on 15 July along Carrer de Torrent d’en Vidalet. The addition follows a city grant that covers 40 percent of stall fees for vendors using Catalan vermouth brands.
Residents who want to join the custom can start at either listed bar before noon on weekdays, when the terraces are least crowded. Both spots keep the traditional garnish of orange slice and green olive, and neither requires reservations for parties under four.
